So about 9 months ago I decided I would stop supporting "the egg industry" and start raising my own chickens...one problem...I lived in a small appartment! hahahaha...so I finally have a house; we closed on it mid April. We had to do many things in the house before "coop time" so finally today I got to start in the back yard...and I cleared my future coop spot. It will be an open coop and run "combo" 5' wide x 10 ' long x 5'5" tall (give and take...with room to grow) (coop will be 5'wx4Lx4t).

Here are some pics of the backyard and the coop location...I will be loading more of the coop as I go....I am not a carpenter...so it will take me a while!! hahahaha

The rest of the backyard...not huge, but better than an appartment!!!

The spot for the coop before...Darth, my black lab, cheking out the Spot

The coop spot after...nice shade the wood fence is on the north and the coop area will be on the west

    Clearing the dead tree! lol

WoooHoooo!!!!!!!!!! COngrats!!! Looks like the chicks will LOVE IT!! I just have a "regular" sized back yard too, but enough room to have a little flock run around during the day. I am with you, NO MORE FACTORY EGGS! Poor chickens....Actually, not just 20 minutes ago, I was looking out over my deck thinking, chickens are meant to run, roam, scratch, and migrate around. They are SO funny to watch when the sun bathe, dust bathe, chase the dogs...LOL...We were going to get 3....LOL...then we ended up with 11 hens!!!! HAHAHA Thats TRUE chicken math for ya! We don't have a HUGE coop, or space for a HUGE coop, but they all fit in the coop and roosts, have room to eat and nest boxes at one end and then below the coop is a fenced in run that they can go "outside" when they want to but be safe when we are not home. But during most of each day, the run area is opened for them and they roam our back yard. It just feels right, it's what chickens do. I have a hard time imagining those poor chickens stuffed into little wire cages or even stuffed into a room where they don't have any space to stretch out, or not be touched. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah....LOL...The point of my story....It doesn't matter the size of the yard, it's the quality of life you offer that matters and it looks like you have a lot of good bushes and shade for them!! I say you need 10-12 hens!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh....I have to tell ya...my husband is a tough man, but became a softie! Your wife will fold, and it doesn't LOOK like 11 when they are SOOO small! hehehehe You fall in love with the small peeps and here are GOOD arguments for getting "more" than you plan for.....
    1. 1 or more might be a roo
    2. They all need friends
    3. You want a variety of colored eggs....you might get blue, green or pink eggs and all colors of brown with speckles!
    4. Some times you lose one to weather or other things...

We planned on losing a few and lost NONE! LOL! It still doesn't look like 11 even as they get bigger and the BR IS our favorite! She is the sweetest and likes to be held like a baby on her back! hahaha Being our first flock we got 1 (or more) of several breeds and I fell in love with EEs, Welsummers and BRs, but they are all very sweet and special
