I get my chicks next week!! As excited as i am I'm also worried that ill screw up. I plan on working in leaves from the yard into their litter so they're exposed to the germs in our run and consequently their future run. I don't want hens that every time they get a runny nose i shove medicine down their throats. I'm getting non-medicated organic chick crumbles is there anything i can add to their water (no chemicals!!)?? I remember reading somewhere i could add garlic or ACV to the water. Any advice from the as close to nature as possible chicken people?

I was in your same boat about four weeks ago, best advice I can give is that don't stress and enjoy the little fur balls. If you watch them closely they will tell you what they need. I don't even use a thermostat anymore I go off the chicks body language as I gradually raise the light each week. If they are huddled together right under the light I moved it too far if they are all spread out in the farthest corners of the brooder they are too hot. Now with exposing them to Germs by adding leaves and what not to their brooder this is just my opinion but I would wait until they are a little older before doing that. The little chics are battling enough with the shipping and stress that brings to have to worry about fighting germs. Also if you do add leaves make sure they are completely dry as moisture is bad in brooders and can cause mold that can really hurt them. This is my first flock and they are 4 weeks and they really are so much fun, just enjoy the experience and don't over think it bc trust me they will let you know if they are not happy lol hope this helped!

Also adding a avc to their water every now and again is really good for them
