First time chicken momma here! I got two “barred rock” pullets from a local feed store. They’re going to be two weeks old tomorrow (I’m assuming their hatch date was about two days before I got them). Chick one is smaller and just getting white on her wings. Chick two is larger, nearly all black and never had a white spot on top of her head. After doing a little research on this site I think chick two may be a black australorp or black sex link. She has white on her butt and a little under her chin.
Will I have to wait until they’re older to figure out if they’re australorp or sex link? Are there any characteristics I can look for to determine breed at this age.

EDIT: CHICK NUMBER 2 WITH THE BLACK FEET ISN’T A BARRED ROCK. ( I didn’t notice) I’m pretty sure first one is a barred rock chick. They start getting their stripes once they lose their fluff.
Below is a picture of my barred rock as a chick. She was older than yours an just getting stripey.

Here are some younger hatchery chicks too.

they start off with small white or yellowish patches on their heads/ chests.

I hope she’s a barred rock! I’ve been worried because she never had a white spot on top of her head and she’s much bigger than the other chick.

I'm pretty sure the black chick is not barred.

Black Australorp should have white bottoms on the feet.
Black Jersey Giant and Black Sexlink should have yellow bottoms on the feet.

Black Sexlink usually gets some red or gold in the feathers of the breast and neck area.
Black Australorp or Black Jersey Giant should not have any red or gold in their feathers.

Here are some updated pictures of my girl now that she’s about 6 weeks old. She’s getting slightly green irredentist sheen to her feathers in the sunlight and a little bit of brownish gold on her chest any guesses on breed?

Probably a Black Sexlink.

For most purposes, they are just as good as Barred Rocks. (When they are not as good: if you are trying to breed pure Barred Rocks or if you want to enter them in a chicken show.)

That was my guess. Thank you! I just have a backyard flock for eggs/enjoyment. So far she is one of my most friendly chickens. I’m loving her personality
