Somebody was watching out for my ducks last night.

is that a lawn tractor in the left lower corner under the tree? YIKES that is a big limb!

we had half a eucalyptus tree fall on our house early this year - right across the roof over the bed... with me in it! ok, THAT will wake you up! trunk was maybe 14" across and 40' long. learned later that these particular eucalyptus trees are called "widow-makers" by the aussies just because of this very behavior! made me wonder what the folks were thinking when they planted them 10 feet from the house...

glad you and your family escaped harm.

ETA: don't know if it's true with maples, but with the eucalyptus this happens 2-3 weeks after a really good rain. it apparently takes that long to draw the water up into the upper part of the tree, which increases it's weight considerably and then exceeds it structural capability.

Yes, the tractor/mower took the hit. But it needed to go to the junk yard anyway. Not running. Glad it was the only thing damaged. Thanks for all your feedback.
