I have a 12 month old Araucana that over the last week seems to be having trouble holding her head up. She (Phyllis - due to the blue rinse bouffant hairdo) looks healthy overall, is eating & drinking (has stopped laying though). Her head is tucked down to her chest & she shakes it repeatedly - it kind of looks as as though she's pecking at her chest. She's off balance and tipping over a lot - I even spotted her doing a couple of somersaults this morning. To be honest she's always been on the strange side & often has us laughing at her strange ways. Could it possibly just be that she's run into the gate or one of the other girls & has put her neck out - or does this sound more sinister. If anyone has any ideas what I can do to help poor Phyllis, I'd love to hear them.[IMG]

She is showing signs of torticolis or wry neck. That is a symptom of many things, such as a head injury, a vitamin deficiency, and in certain diseases affecting the brain, such as Mareks disease. She needs to get poultry vitamins that include vitamin E, and you can give her some chopped egg or nuts daily for selenium which also helps. Poultry Nutri-drench or Poultry Cell vitamins from many feed stores contain both E and selenium, and the dosage is 1 ml for every 3 pounds daily given orally. For her probably give 2 ml. Make sure that she is eating and drinking enough, since dehydration can add to her problems. Wrapping her in a towel, and feeding her food with added water may help several times a day.

thanks so much for your help - I do think it sounds like wry/crook neck. I'll give the vitamins a go & see if there's any improvements.
