i have a hen who has been spending hours in the nest box. i saw it yesterday and today. yesterday it was several hours and then she slept in it. today it has been the past 4ish hours. she is puffed up and makes a weird cry when i come by her. she is very calm, picking her up, checking her out. i thought maybe she is egg bound, we gave her a bath, and she ran back to the nesting box with nothing. i tried to stimulate the outside of the vent, and stuck my finger in there, but ive never done this before to know how far to go. i did not feel an egg, but not sure i went in enough. i was to my knuckle, then she seemed to get uncomfortable. thoughts? i had a chicken almost 2 weeks ago now with cocci, i treated the flock and no other symptoms from any chickens.

Is there a large amount of eggs under her when you pick her up? Is there a rooster in your flock? If there's any eggs at all under her when you pick her up it sounds like she went broody. She's trying to hatch the eggs if there was/is eggs under her.

She lays in there in the afternoons. Typically no eggs by then, maybe 1. I go down hourly to get eggs since we have a snake who likes to eat them. She is all puffed up and the cry she makes I have never heard before

    Canada eh?
You got a broody on your hands! Lol! They puff up to make themselves look bigger and make that noise to try and intimidate you to protect their eggs(even if they are hatching invisible ones)

If you keep finding one or so eggs under her she is probably trying to stock up on eggs to hatch. Try to catch the snake by doing this then let her go broody: First: Get a cage with holes about teh width of the snakes head so it can just barely get threw. Put some eggs in the cage or something else big it will eat. Wait until it goes in. It will eat the bait but it will cause it to get to fat to fit back threw the holes.
