What breed of chicken would be suitable for Central New York? More specifically, one that would be able to tolerate harsh winters...

RIR, New Hampshires, Delewares. I think most of the Heavy breeds.

I like the ones with minimal combs, pea and rose comb varieties like buckeyes and wyandottes.

http://www.Meyerhatchery.com has actual photos of their birds rather than just those old paintings so you can see the kind of combs more easily and they mention which breeds are hardy. Other websites probably do too.

Naked necks, Orloffs, Chanteclers, and brahmas & cochins do well here.

Way up north here too upstate NY. All the breeds already mentioned, would work well. We have Delawares , NH Reds,Blk Austrolorps,a few Buckeyes..a solid dry shelter goes along way, and no drafts..Freezing water is useally our biggest problem too deal with. Have fun!
