I just wanted to share some information that helped me when I discovered my RIR was sick. On Monday I noticed she wasn't acting herself. She was sitting and hiding a lot. Her comb was very floppy (usually stands up straight) and was discolored (bluish purple in color). I picked her up to examine her closer and when I went to put her back on the ground she "threw up" water. That's when I noticed the squishy crop. It felt like a big water balloon. Sour crop! First thing Tuesday morning I went out and bought Monistat 3. I read on another BYC post this worked for them (as sour crop is a form of yeast infection) and I was willing to give it a try. Cut each pill in thirds and feed a third to your chicken each morning and evening until all 9 pieces are done. I also separated her from the rest of the flock just so she couldn't eat the chicken feed. I put ACV in her water and fed her plain yogurt and scrambled eggs for two days. On the third day I added a little wet/mashed chicken feed. Unfortunately I had a vacation planned already so by day four I needed to leave. But by then I noticed she was doing better so I left her out with the rest of the flock with access to their normal feed and hoped she would do well. When I returned on Sunday she was scratching and pecking, drinking. Her comb was standing straight and it was back to a bright red color. I really think catching it early helped. I can't stress enough how important it is to observe your flock regularly so you can spot a problem quickly. I am so happy my girl is back to herself!!
