I picked up a bag of Purina chick feed today, when I emptied it into the bin, it had a sour smell to it, like what wet grain smells like 3 days later.
It's a new bag, not wet or moldy. Dry and free pouring. It just smells sour. Has it happened to anyone else?

I know this is a very old post, but I have the same issue. I’ve smelled this same smell once before when I brought home 2 Silkies from a breeder. She started me off with the feed she uses so I could wean it to my choice of feed. It smelled sour when I opened the ziplock bag so I threw it out. I feed Nutrena nature smart crumbles but can’t find it since my local feed store stopped selling it. I purchased a 50lb bag of nature wise (the non-organic equivalent). Tag says it was bagged November 2017. It has that same sour smell to it but is dry and not moldy at all. Have you figured out why? I’ve researched everywhere but cannot find any reasoning.

Not in my case, my feed is kept in my house where we actually are lacking humidity in the winter because of forced heating. Any other suggestions? It smelled this way upon opening a new bag.
If the feed was always dry and not spoiled? Then what's the worry?
