Is the splash a standard color for Silkies? The judge at our county fair didn't give my daughters chicken Reserve because it isn't a recognized color. We've seen other splashes win at shows. It's too late to do anything about the placing, but we would like to know for next year.

Splash has been recognised for silkies by both the ABA & APA for YEARS. I would file a complaint with the fair; it won't change your daughter's award--you need to protest at the time--but perhaps next time they will make sure to have a more knowledgeable judge.

Is there a source online that states the official APA Silkie standard colors?

What gets me is that splash is recognized in silkies...but not in Langshans! ARG.

Why can't we just make splash an accepted variety. At least when THAT color is bred together it breeds true!

I just judged a county fair yesterday. Sounds like you need to get a new judge! Splash is indeed a recognized color for Silkies, I would definitely file a grievance with your Fair Board.

I hate it when that sort of thing happens. Please give your daughter my sympathies...

I was looking up Partidge Silkie to see if it was accepted and stumbled on this thread. According to the "recognized breeds" link on the website for the American Poultry Association, the splash color is only recognized in bearded silkies and was accepted in 2001. It is not listed as an accepted color for non-bearded silkies. Go figure.

Silkie Bearded Blue 1996 Feather Legged
Silkie Bearded Buff 1996 Feather Legged
Silkie Bearded Gray 1996 Feather Legged
Silkie Bearded Partridge 1996 Feather Legged
Silkie Bearded Splash 2001 Feather Legged
Silkie Bearded White 1874 Feather Legged
Silkie Non-Bearded Black 1965 Feather Legged
Silkie Non-Bearded Blue 1996 Feather Legged
