Not sure where to post this so feel free to move to appropriate forum if needed.

I have always wonder why do chickens sometime poop the sticky black poop that is very stinky? It is what they ate or a way to deter predator?

I think they all smell bad, but my chickens have darker to black poo after picking the blackberry bushes clean.

Most of the poop I see from mines are firm in shape, green and white in color and doesn't even smell half as bad as the black sticky poop.

I think it changes color depending on diet and stresses. Not positive though, just what I have observed in my own small flock.

Are you talking about cecal poop?

[IMG]So that's what they're called. I have always wonder why those type of poop were so smelly.

I think it depends on what they eat? It's really frustrating, because I want to feed vegetable and fruit scraps to my chickens, who love that sort of thing (especially watermelon rind) but as soon as they eat that, their poop becomes liquid and smelly. They free-range so it's really annoying when they go and poop all over the deck LOL, if it's dry poop I can simply sweep it away but runny poop makes a huge mess.
