Well, my 6 older girls are molting and my 4 younger girls haven't started laying yet. I am down to half a dozen eggs. I thinks it time to face the facts. By Friday I will have to buy eggs from the grocery store. I haven't had a grocery store egg in over a year.
If you're forced to buy store bought eggs, stores like Costco sell the organic brown eggs. How old are your younger girls? Hopefully they will begin laying soon. What kind of hens do you have?
My older girls are 19 months old: 2 barred rocks, 1 black australorp, 2 black sexlinks, and a mixed breed. My 4 younger girls are mixed breeds from these hen's eggs and are 20 weeks old. I was hoping they would start laying before my girls went thru their first molt but it didn't happen. Oh well....my older girls are really good layers so I don't mind being patient.
It happens. Mine are molting here too. So, I only get maybe 1 egg, twice a week. I've also got a few older hens, that really don't lay much anymore either. I don't like having to buy eggs. Even the cage free, etc. ones aren't the same.
