I am going to be ordering some sexed-standards and some straight-run bantams this upcoming Spring. My last order (from Ideal) were all sexed-standards, and out of 12 females only 1 turned out to be male.

I've read a few posts about certain hatcheries and their ratios. I'd love to hear some opinions on the subject please. Thanks

If the hatchery is ethical, your odds are 50-50 with each chick if you get if you order straight run. If they put in packing peanuts to get the numbers up for warmth, there is a fair chance of getting males with these. That can tilt the odds a bit. If you order sexed chicks, you stand a pretty good chance of getting what you want. Sexing baby chicks is very difficult.

I got mine from Cackle. What I ordered and what I got were:

Ordered 5 Delaware pullets. Got 4 pullets and one cockerel.
Ordered 10 Australorp pullets. Got 10 Australorp pullets.
Ordered 6 straight run Speckeld Sussex. Got 2 pullets and 4 cockerels.
Ordered 6 straight run Buff Orpingtons. Got 7 pullets. One was a packing peanut.

The cynics can say what they want. I believe some hatcheries are ethical.

I ordered Straight Run Golden Sebrights and White Silkies from Ideal Poultry last September. I received:

Sebrights
3 roosters
3 hens

Silkies
4 roosters
3 hens

I had originally ordered six Silkies, but Ideal sent me an extra one.

I ordered from Ideal. Order by breed then packing peanuts

EEs ordered 5 girls
got 4 girls, 1 boy

BR 2 girls, got 2 girls

CM 3 girls, got 3 girls

RIR 2 girls, 2 girls

WL 2 girls, 2 girls

BA 2 girls, 2 girls

Packing peanuts 2 CM girls and 4 BR roos

We never order straight run for any chicks. Only what we want per sex. 50-50 is best odds on st run. In our experience 65% roos vs 35% hens. From any hatchery we have ever ordered.

We got 100 straight run chicks from Cackle. They ran pretty close to 50-50 I orders 10 straight run ducks from Holdereads and only got 3 females.

On straight run, usually you get half males and half females. But anything can happen. I got a dozen hatching eggs once. They all hatched. They were all roosters. They were straight run, meaning as hatched but they were all males anyway.
