Strange pecking behavior

We have four hens about 18-19 months old. For the past year one of them wants to be boss and will peck my hand strongly if I try to touch her. But for the past two weeks something strange has happened, if I reach down and she pecks me one of the other chickens reaches over and pecks her. It has happened 5 or 6 times in a row and today was the worst. The protective hen literally jumped on her and started a huge fight. There has been no other pecking going on among them that I have observed.

What in chicken feathers is going on? As far as I know I have not established any special relationship with the other hen.

Sounds like #2 want to be #1. Each time top dog shows aggression #2 probably steps in. They will work it out. I try not to interfere unless it gets bloody.
