My girls (I hope) are 3 1/2 weeks. The barred rocks stand sometimes with their beaks straight up in the air and open their mouths. I looks like they are either yawning, choking or (gosh I hope not) trying to crow, but no sound is coming out. Has anyone seen this behavior and can shed some light on it for me?

My rooster does that too. I have no idea why. My guess is he is practicing his crow???

Oh no. So are you saying this is characteristic of Roosters only? I am hoping I don't have roosters, but when I saw that behavior I was concerned.

My chicks do that too. It doesn't seem to be anything as they are still growing and are healthy. I haven't noticed the older chicks doing it anymore. I have 3 that are 4 weeks old and 6 that are 10 weeks old.
