Adopted this stray chicken from the animal shelter today. She was picked up several days ago in not the nicest section of town and not surprisingly, no one came to reclaim her. She seems friendly & is quite easily handled though. I was thinking maybe some kind of game bird cross? She's pretty slender.
Do you have any idea how old this bird might be? Has the bird laid an egg? If so, you know it is a hen, and yes could have some game mix in it, but is definitely a mix as the head is wrong for a game hen EDITED TO ADD...it looks a bit heavy in the second pic as most games have a very delicate looking head....but if at POL, then most likely a game mix. It has some aspects of a Black Sex Link (but too thin/slender however has gold bleed through at hackles) or a Black Australorp (green sheen but shouldn't have any red/gold at hackles). Almost has the frame of a Leghorn, but that could be lack of care and the bird may fill out with proper feed and care to look more layer type. However... The problem is that if the bird is only about 10 to 12 weeks old, it could be a rooster. It is hard to tell a young rooster from a young, but older pullet. That tail is a bit worrisome, and that could be a developing comb. That could account for the slender build at this time as it simply has not matured yet. Age makes a big difference as to what this might be. Lady of McCamley
Have you tried posting the photo at "what breed or gender is this?" Nice looking bird and docile, someone must have spent time with it.
Is that not this section? Or is there a specific thread to post in? No idea on age; they told me adult & I just brought the chicken home tonight, so nope, haven't seen any eggs or heard any crowing.
