What is it with boys? [IMG] Why oh why is there always one duck that ALL of the drakes seem to want to the exclusion of all the other girls? A couple years ago it was my favorite little Australian spotted that all 3 or 4 drakes went after to the exclusion of the other dozen or so girls. I have a completely new batch of ducks (thanks to a dog attack before we moved). Now it's a Pekin-WH cross who looks pure Pekin except isn't quite as big. I have one drake to 6 ducks; only have a drake at all because I got him a part of a pair of silver appleyards & was interested in trying to breed a few batches. But the stupid boy is ignoring his assigned mate in favor of pestering the PekinX. Ironically, the PekinX was given to me because she was being overbred by the drakes at the place she came from and we figured my ratio would be a lot better for her. Go figure. I'm really hoping as spring gets here his attentions will spread. Otherwise he's looking a lot like crispy duck with orange sauce to me! (I have no interest in breeding Pekin crosses and don't want to confine the appleyards away from the rest.)

It's funny my boys tend to be gentlemen with their mates but total animals with everyone elses, I find unpaired hens get it worse as they don't have a drake for protection.

Do drakes protect their mates? I didn't know that. My drake has never been in a situation where I could observe this? Can a drake have 2 mates if they are always penned together in the PM? My drake is very quite and shy, is it all drakes or just bolder drakes that protect their female(s)? I noticed that a few of the females, including the drakes gutsy mate, display more aggressive warnings toward our dogs then he does. Just curious.

My Pekin drake always seems to try to breed with only one of my females and barely leaves it alone. He barely cares about the other one. Now most of feathers on the females neck are missing and she looks kind of bald.
