So the typical story - quietly raising three hens in the backyard since May. The Code Enforcement officer left a violation notice yesterday afternoon saying no chickens or rooster allowed in city limits, and citing the code. What really set us off was that we had looked in the code, and it was pretty nonspecific, i.e. no more than three animals of any species, no letting birds fly around. The section that the officer quotes is buried under the yard zoning sections, and has different limits on animals (5 mostly, zero poultry). These different codes seem to conflict, but the stricter one may trump (wife is a lawyer btw). While we will fight these by all avenues available, the most desirable route is to get the code cleaned up to allow hens. This is a small suburb of a suburb (Fairfield, county seat of Solano, San Francisco Bay area). I already have the support of some of the neighbors, and will be talking to the city soon. If you live in Suisun and would like to help, please let me know. Any other help would also be appreciated. Thanks for reading.
