Sunflower seeds, shelled or not?

When I buy the black sunflower seeds, should I buy them shelled or unshelled?

I feed my hens regular BOSS unshelled. They love them. Its their treat each nite before bed.

Tractor Supply has them. I buy whole black oil seeds. My birds eat them fast & furious.

i feed them in the shell. they gobble them down like they'll run away if they dont eat fast!

As long as the birds are getting grit the shells shouldn't be a problem. None with mine but I try not to overdo--too much of even a good thing can be bad.
