I recently learned the reason why I was losing my Nankin bantam chicks and chickens.
I put two videos of my nankins on this forum and pretty much got the same answers.
Research has confirmed
My nankins have a genetic problem that will most likely cause the three that I have left to die.
I am being told that it goes back to the breeder
i was told to tell the breeder, but being married to a lawyer i am afraid of being sued or being yelled at. My mouth often gets the best of me
I am also being told that the next Nankin that dies, for educational purposes I should cut it open and look at the heart liver lungs and other organs, mainly the heart
I feel like i should do that. here are my fears
I cant cut something open that is gonna bleed
guts is my other thing and
i dont know what its going to smell like, if it smells i will surely puke
i am going to get a book on how to do this but for now i need to know from people on the forum that has done this, and how they overcame cutting open their pets. I truly love my pets
all of them

Get someone else to do it? Is there a vet school in the area?

You could put a clip on your nose to avoid the smell. Oddly I find that I can't smell much when I am wearing foam earplugs. My ears feel the pressure and tell my brain that my sinuses are stopped up. My brain believes it too.

Crystal, if all that bothers you so much, why don`t you just relax and write it all off to a bad experience. Get yourself some new chicks and, if the remaining two make it, you can maybe find a breeder, roo or hen, at a later time. Chickens are a fun hobby, although not all aspects are fun, but try to enjoy it. Lifes too short to deal with that kind of stress........Pop

I would contact the colllege near you with a avian department. Have them do the autopsy. Then you have documented proof of what is wrong with these birds.

I would then send an offical letter from the college to the breeder so they know what is wrong with their flock. If I was a breeder I would want to know.

Get yourself some new chicks from a different breeder and enjoy them:)

I have always taken responsibility for caring for my animals. All though I have not yet culled a chick that needed to be culled. God forbid when and if that time comes because I really have no clue what if anything I would do. I believe that death should occur over pain and suffering. that is why the animal world in my opinion is more humane. I agreed with Dr. Jack Kavorkian totally.
If I called the college would they come and get it or would they tell me to ship a dead bird to them on an ice chest
My husband just told me that when the chicken dies that it would no longer bleed when cutting it open
that blood will stop flowing
and others told me that as soon as it dies it needs to go into a refrigerator immediatly
one of my other chicks is showing the signs of problems
do i let it die naturally or do i have the poor thing culled
I can post two videos of what will hapopen to my chicks/chicken when they die
it really isnt good to look at
they turn blueish purple and gasp for air, for several hours. will taking the chickens/chicks life interfere with what the avian school needs to do to find the problem? Or do I need to let it die naturally
there is a big part of me that wants to notify this breeder and tell her off, but once i start ill go poster on her if she denies it
My children always would beg for a spankings rather than hear me gripe all day about what they did or didnt do that ticked me off

I too couldnt imagine culling my chickens, or watching them suffer. See if there is anything you can do for it. It sounds like a very tough situation to be in. Honestly, if i were in your shoes, i would call the breeder. Remember, there is always a possibility that the breeder might not know anyting about it. Tell them that you have enough evidence that it is caused by a genetic problem in the chickens that leads back to the breeder. If you need to yell or be rude, then so be it - you are the one dealing with the heartache of losing your pets. I feel you have the right. Good luck with everything.

my question and concern is: will medicating it and or culling it interfere with the avian school doing the cutting open thing to see the insides, forgot what its called
the people that posted the thread made the most sense, by having the professionals do it so that i have evidence/proof.
this way i could have my husband write her a letter to let her know that her breeders are not good
all of the Nankins that I got from this breeder that survive the incubation, live for 24 hours up to a year
they all have the same symptoms and my flock and coops are not the problem

Only my nankins are dying and all with the same symptoms
other than my neighbors dog killing my adult birds, i have never just lost an adult hen
knock on wood
the school has to do the autopsy, and i need it in writing
does this chicken have to dye naturally or can i have it culled for the school to diagnose the problem

Im not sure about the medication interfering with the autopsy.
Try to google it. im not familiar with what meds to use & how to
treat it if there is a way. I agree that it is wiser to have a pro do
it & then have your husband send the letter. That does sound better.
I wish you lots of luck with everything.
Keep us updated.

i ordered several different kinds of antibiotics and worm medications from the vet suply
with the other chicks/chickens that i had that died and antibiotics were given at first sign did not help
I am being told that this is probably a heart defect do to the behavior of the bird
i even took my last Nankin to the vet who stated that he treated chickens
well he didnt know because he mainly treated dogs and cats
i was the only person sittin in his waitin room with a baby chick
my chick was sick and he was taking other pets in front of me
finally i approached his receptionist and showed her my chick and told her that if i wasnt seen by the dr. in three minutes we were leaving and taking our money iwth us
we should had left cause he didnt know his butt from a hole in the ground when it came to my little chick
