surprise chick colors

    I understand the sexlink/silver gene thing, that is why I am surprised to get so many light colored chicks out of the parents.

    I posted a picture of the red (orange) barred rooster on here lately. The mothers are either barred or black sex link (at least in appearance), their actual heritage is unknown. anyway of 8 chicks hatched only half are black, the others are light redish in color. I know that a production red and barred hen produces no red chicks, and i suspect the same from a black sex link hen too.

    can someone explain to me how i am getting these light colored chicks from this cross?

    both parents are gold based. The light chickdown probably is from the wheaten gene (lack of chipmunk stripes).
