So, has anyone ever had a chicken that ruptured its eye? My 3-4month old Polish rooster managed to get his head smacked by a door. I'm assuming a piece of wire poked the eye. Flushed the area with saline and there is an obvious tear behind the lens. Gave a few doses of IM pain meds and started him on antibiotic food along with topical triple antibiotic ointment to the eye area. I work at a vet school and was wondering if they do well without closing the wound or should I sedate him and have the orbit cleaned out and sutured closed. Thank you for any and all input. Today he is back to eating and drinking, and allows me to clean and medicate the eye.

Welcome to BYC!

For something like this, it sounds like you are doing just fine.

Keep flushing it out and applying the antibio oint. :) He should heal himself before too long.

They also make Veterycin eye drops available at Tractor Supply and most local feed stores.

You could always try that. :)

Ok! I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to convince our ophtho intern to sedate and close the eye. I have grown up with chickens, but work mostly with small animals so wanted to make sure I was handling him appropriately! I will pick up some of the Vetericyn eye wash this afternoon! Surprisingly, there are few vets that are confident in companion poultry medicine.

Wonderful!

And I hear you about the vet thing.

My first and last visit with a chicken ended with the vet telling me, "I read this on BYC."

Oh, reeeeeally? :3
