We had our rooster (Rocky) first then bought 6 1 wk old Rhode Island Reds and 6 1 yr old (or so) white leghorn and 1 big hen the guy didnt know what she was. Rocky was great to start with but this past weekend I noticed Big Mama( big hen) staying on top and her cone was bleeding so I started watching and it's Rocky! he keeps jumping on her so bad her mouth was pouring blood. I had a very loud talking to with him. I held her & checked her out to make sure she was ok and fed her & water. Yesterday she was still on top & I think she is only coming down when I come in. What is going on with him? What should I do?! I love him cause he was my first & very beautiful. I have no idea what kind he is. My uncle said he had bought dyed bitties at easter last year & he was one of them. I just let the babies out into the coop and he hasnt messed with any of them!! I'm new to this so one more question. Rocky jumps on the hens back and grabs them by the neck feather for less than a minute is this a mating thing or he is just being a bully?!

The fact that your hen's beak was bleeding concerns me a little. A cockerel shouldn't injure a hen's face (or any part of her body) when mating, or attempting to do so. I think you should separate the two of them until she had time to recover and heal. When a cockerel mates with a hen he'll grab the back of her neck, close to her head and mount her back as you described. The mating usually takes a few seconds only.

We came home the day I posted this and Rocky had the back of her neck all tore up & bleeding. We put him in another pen. How long do I need to keep him seperate? I know she needs to heal. She was slobbering I think because she had been at the top of the nest all day until I got there. I got her some water & she ate from my hand cause as soon as she got down he went after her. It really saddens me because he was my first. My husband wonders if it has to do with the chics somehow. Rocky was a good boy until the day we let the lil ones out of their pen. They had been in the big pen but in a cage so Rocky could get use to them. He never once hurt the chics but that's when he started hurting Big Mama. I pray she will heal & he will calm down when we put him back with the girls. Thanks for the advice!

Any mean birds in my flocks go to 'jail' for about a week. If they are 3 time offenders they go to the soup pot. You could try dominate him by carrying him around by the legs trying to teach him he is not so dominate. That said I have had to go through several roosters to get a good one. Currently I have one on probation, and one that is a gentleman. 4 became dog/people food to get the current 2. Getting a good rooster can be a process as agressiveness to people or hens is not uncommon..

I had the same problem with my buff rooster (he's young maybe 6 months) i have 5 hens and him in a pen and he everyday would attack 1 individual hen. she always seemed depressed so i built a chicken tractor without wheels lol and put her in it. shes been in there 3 days and already doing better. besides being lonely. today i moved here next to the other chickens and schuster the rooster started clawing at the ground near her. i dont know why but he does not like that hen. he never messes with the other 4 just her. i have some younger hens in another pen im waiting till they get a little older and put little bit(the picked on) in with them. see how that goes.but the op's original question remains why does a rooster pick on a certain hen?(hopefully thats ops original question :) )

My girls went from laying 6 eggs a day to none so far this week! I thought it maybe had to do with Rocky being gone so we put him back in. Within a half a hour he was terrorizing big mama again. I gave him until today to calm down but when I got home he had her neck & mouth tore up! I removed him again. Could the lack of eggs be something else? 6 is alot and it was every single day! then to go to none?! I'm clueless. any advice?
