So our 8 month old rooster and some of our hens have come down with something that we are not sure what it is. It started with them getting fowl pox and has gone down hill from there. The rooster has one swollen eye some nasal discharge and a rattling sound when breathing. He will make a cough sound every now and again. Another one has swollen eyes, discharge and is struggling to breathe but she doesnt rattle like it does with the rooster. A third one has the rattling when breathing but no swelling in her eyes or nasal discharge.

We have separated them from the rest of the flock and are treating all of them with tylan and electrolytes. We are syringe feeding the ones that we haven't seen drink the medicated water or eat anything. We have lost one bird to this already and are not sure what the chances for the rest are.

The rest of the flock are showing no signs of sickness but to be safe we have dosed their water with tylan and electrolytes.

Any help on what this is and if there is anything else we can do to help save them would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like a common respiratory illness. It's contagious so it's wise of you to separate the sick chickens from the ones with no symptoms.

To rule out something else, please check inside the mouths of the sick chickens. Look for sticky plaque deposits crowding the back of the throat. If these are present, it could mean the chicken have canker, caused by a protozoa.

Terramycin is a good antibiotic to use in the swollen eyes. Use it in addition to the Tylan.

You are mixing the Tylan in their water and not giving them direct doses of Tylan straight to the beak?

Which exact Tylan do you have?

The tylan we have is a powder. It is this one:

It is what our vet had on hand. He admitted he doesn't know a lot about chickens but he was nice enough to see the chicken at 5 PM on a friday anyway. He said to mix 2 ml of powder to 1 quart of water for the sick chickens. We are syringe feeding the medicated water to the ones that don't drink on their own. And we also mixed a little of the water in with the food that we are having to syringe feed with.

I couldn't see anything stuck to the back of the throat. Looked pretty clean from what I could tell.
