Our chicks are now 6 day old. I've been seeing some get their tail feathers, more in some than others. Does this mean they are really older? Or just a breed that matures faster?
    I got
    8 from hatchery on hatch day (3EE 2BA 3GC)
8 on 2nd day from feed store (4BA 2BO 1GC 1BCM). 1 of the BA from store acts quite differently and has feathers, rest BA that day don't have such pronounced tail feathers. All but a few have started. It's like we have late bloomers and fast maturity in one flock. Is this normal? Mind you; this is my first flock as you probably can tell.

Some breeds mature faster and even individuals of the same breed can develop at different rates. They have growth spurts just like kids.

Thanks.does that mean they'll lay faster than others also?

Mine were all one breed, same age and they all started laying within about a month of each other.

Hi, I'm new to byc and I can't figure out how to make my own post for some reason! I noticed this one was fairly recent and about tail feathers so I'm hoping you don't mind that I post here, and that someone will be able to answer. I have 7 five week old chicks, four are EE/ ameraucana and three are barred rocks. I noticed today that some seem to be either losing their tail feathers or something. I'm wondering if it's normal and an indicator of pullets/roos? I took a few photos but the lighting is not great. In this pic there is one with the stumpy tail and one with a regular tail. Thank you for any help!

"Start a new thread" and [IMG], sometimes they will pull out their own or others feathers. May be molting too.

thank you. Now they are 2 wks 1 day old. Almost all have tail feathers and the last 2 are starting to show. Yes, I believe the molting as they are quite ratty in the wings.

You are welcome but my comments were meant for amymya. Mine are only days older than yours Mamatink7. Barely have tail feathers without them being pulled out. Starting to get the chickasourus thing going.
