I got a handful of Cream Legbar babies from a breeder at the end of March. This little girl is smaller than the rest and obviously doesn't have a tail. At first I thought that she was she was some sort of throwback to the tailless Auracanas that were used to develop Cream Legbars. But after reading more about the creation of Cream Legbars, I've discovered that R.C. Punnett, who developed Legbars didn't use Auracanas, per se, but in fact used a "blue egg laying, crested, light yellowish-brown crested hen from Chile" for the genes for the Cream Legbar crest and blue eggs. I'm thinking Punnett's hen must have been a landrace variety that contained a lot of the same genetics as Auracanas, but there's no mention of this hen lacking a tail. So where does this leave me? Any thoughts on what's going on with my little hen? Can taillessness arise spontaneously??
