My husband took his wild turkey call down into the basement brooder with the (almost) month-old turkey poults today. It was hilarious. It's a scratchy-box-looking thing, and on one side you can make the call of a hen, and the other side is supposed to sound more like a tom, and you do different stuff to make different calls (signals/language). Anyway, the funniest thing was, even though these babies have never laid eyes on a "mama" turkey, when Alex made the hen-clucking sound on his call, it was like turkey-hypnosis! They all relaxed, and their eyes started getting droopy wherever they stood/roosted, until they were asleep--even though they'd been running around eating just a minute before. I wish I had a picture, but I was being really still and quiet so as not to spoil the effect! But 2 seconds of the "tom" sound, and BAM! WAKE-UP CALL! They all got really agitated, enough so that I didn't let him do it for more than a few seconds. And to me, the calls sound almost exactly the same; the tom one is just deeper. The calls had the same effect every time we tried them. It was fascinated. Highly recommended cheap entertainment!
