I've read it's good to add these to a winter scratch mix. My girls have had shelled sunflower seeds in their scratch mix for while, but yesterday I grabbed a bag of BOSS to try. I threw out a couple of handfuls, and the girls passed them by-it was almost like they didn't see them on the ground? Should I expect that if they do start eating them, they will crack the shell and just eat the inside, or do they eat the whole thing, shell and all?

They will eat the whole thing...no need to shell them.

What is BOSS? I've seen this mentioned on another thread.

My chickens passed them up too---at first. Now they practically fight over them. There is nothing they like better!!

Mine will hop up and down trying to get some from my hand they love them. This winter I am going to try the fodder system with BOSS.

Thanks for the replies... Tried again today and they still weren't all that interested. But, I'm just going to go ahead and mix in with the cracked corn and give it a go.

Don't worry, once they figure it out, you'll practically have to fight them off to feed them. I have to be careful when giving them a handful or they'll peck my hand before I can even drop them.
