Hi members!!! I'm new to the membership but definitely not new to your forum! My family and I played around with the idea of getting chickens for a while but always found a reason not to mostly due to space at our lake house. Recently we purchased our new home in the country with lots of land and possibilities. Going to the local farm store to buy our first garden tractor but I think my husband felt bad after I spent my hard earned bonus to pay for his $3000 lawn mower he insisted that we get baby chicks. I wasn't on board at the time but it made our daughter happy (7) and our son has always wanted them (12) so I jumped on the wagon pretty fast. I wasn't super happy about all the new babies that we weren't prepared for right at that moment but thanks to all the research I had done in BYC in the last few months I felt confident enough to use that knowledge and so we bought 4 barred rocks, 2 Rhode Island reds, and 2 aurucanas (all based on what I had read on BYC) we brought them home absolutely in love. They had a homemade brooder purchased at the same time and lived in the basement (kids playroom) for 5 weeks! They are now in our homemade coop (thanks for all the ideas BYC) 8x9x11 feet high. We had 3 with pasty butt that I spent hours with olive oil, warm water, and qtips; all survived and thrived. We had 8 until about a week ago when our beloved GSD pup (11 months, 100+ lbs) spotted one of our Rhonde islands that escape when my daughter left their run and thought he would "play" with her. I know now that we are lucky at 6 weeks old that we still had every single one we started with....accidents happen and everyone learned a lesson from that situation! Long story long, I LOVE this site and will be posting lots and lots of pictures soon all thanks to BYC!! We look forward to learning more as our adventure progresses!!
