Hello everyone! I was raised on a farm but haven't kept chickens for 35 years.
I built my coop 4 feet wide by 12 feet long by 12 feet high with a run outside that is 20x15. I have 3 nesting boxes.
I plan to let them free range as soon as they are settled in.
My question is the coop I have big enough for 6 hens? How many are approprite for the space and knowing I will free range in the spring?
Thanks again for the add

48 Ft2 for 6 birds = 8 Ft2 chicken. Seeing as how its recommended that each chicken has at least 4 Ft2 of coop space (10Ft2/chicken of enclosed run)...yeah, I'd say they will live like queens!

Hi and welcome to BYC - great that you have joined us. Agreed - loads of room for a flock of 6, but chicken maths gets us all in the end, so you'll be getting more, I'm sure.

To refresh your memory - you'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

All the best
