    Hi Deb,
Thanks for sharing that sweet poem you did. A week and a half ago, my ONLY laying hen so far who laid me an egg every day was killed by a hawk while I was home. She was a white silkie who I held every day. I hold almost all my birds daily especially the silkies as they are always under me when I'm outside. I was so shocked to find my sweet hen dead that day. The hawk was still sitting beside her fixing to feast down. Apparently it had just happened before I walked outside. I never heard the warning call from the others. I just happened to notice "Momma Bird" wasn't around. My husband and I were looking around the yard for her when he said "There she is! And there's a HAWK with her!!" It was too late. Momma bird was dead. She was totally intact beside a small scratch over her eye. I guess the hawk broke her neck ...I guess,,,I could not tell. That same day my husband went a purchased a strong power action pellet gun,,,it's some sort of high performance pellet gun that is supposed to be able to kill a hawk. I have not seen the hawk again since that day but I'm sure he will come back for another. I never posted my hawk story on here since it happened because I just couldn't bring myself to talk about it.
After reading your poem,,,it totally hit home to me and Momma Bird and I just wanted to thank you for posting it. After she was gone,,,I knew that was looking down and KNOWING she was loved. I have no doubt she liked her home here and she loved me as I loved her. What's weird is the day she died for some reason,,,she laid 2 eggs!! She was my only bird that was laying and for whatever reason she laid me 2 eggs that day. I thought it was special and still do. It was horrible the next morning going to the coop to feed my birds and NO egg from Momma Bird. Every morning,,,the same thing but for some reason I still continue to check her nest where she always laid her egg,,,it's just a habit. I don't know why her life was cut so short. She just hatched herself last February! I hatched her in my incubator so she was MY baby!
Well, today, my smallest silkie hen (I only have 2 silkie hens left) and the smallest one went and got in the coop today in the middle of the day. She's so cute only about 5 inches tall and she was bedded down in there and I just KNEW she was laying her first egg and sure enough she did. The first egg I've gotten since Momma Bird passed. I've always called this little hen "Baby" since she is my smallest. Now that Baby is laying,,I will enjoy going to the coop again and looking for an egg. Too bad Momma Bird isn't still here as they could sit together and chat while they both did their business. Ha I told Baby today,,,I'm sure Momma Bird is proud of you today.
Anyways,,,I didn't mean to ramble on but I loved your poem very much and I know Momma Bird is also enjoying her warm breezes in her new place. I hope she can still see me and know that I loved her and miss her.
    Thanks for sharing, Julie [IMG]

Oh Julie......what a sad story. I am so very sorry you lost your baby that way. It can be very devastateing...and some times....writing about it helps. Writing, or poetry is MY outlet. Im not bragging...but given a topic, I can write a funny, sad, heart warming, or true to home poem, just about anything. I get inspirations from here alot. There are so many wonderfull people here..and some very sad situations. I am just glad...someone can find comfort in my words. I cant always get it out there...but when it helps others....my heart is warmed. You are so very welcome...im glad it helps you.

Thank you guys for your support with Baby and Momma Bird. Baby's egg today is cute. It's not the prettiest egg in the world but it's darn cute. All silkie eggs are small but this one is also a little warped. It's long and lean like a beenie weenie! It must have taken her a while to get out,,,it looks like a cone head egg if you will. Funny. I don't care,,,I'm so proud of her! Thank you guys again for your support. It's amazing how close my bond is with my chickens. I love them each very much. I love all their different personalities and I spend time with them daily. In fact when i walk outside during the day,,,hereeeeeeee they come,,,usually running and flapping towards me, hoping to get a treat. Occasionally, some will even fly to the back porch and what a awful but funny landing they have. I guess the concrete is slick because I have seen them land on their sides and roll around before getting up, if only I had a camera. I have stood out there dying laughing so much at the funny things they do. One thing I've learned....if you have pet chickens,,,you have a great sense of humor! Thanks for replying [IMG] Julie
