Today is glorious! The sun is shinning, it is nearly 50 degrees, and I went down and cleaned out the run, hauled that up for garden mulch, pulled out the bedding in the coop and piled in a corner, for the girls to scratch through. For some reason they never dig in it in the coop, but pull it out to the light of day, and it is full of interesting things.

But mostly it is just a good excuse to get outside, stomp around and rejoice getting over a cold.

I like my chickens cause they get me outside and moving around. Good for my physical health, good for my mental health.

    Amen!

Amen! I just came in from my chickens, too. The sun. I could feel warmth from the sun. I just stood out there, soaking in the warmth! If I didn't have chickens, I may or may not have gotten outside to feel that warmth from the sun! (I know - I'm repeating myself, but it's such a rare treat this time of year!)

I sure do! I don't think our winters are too different, weather-wise. Usually we get whatever you have a day later.

I definitely agree! I would never spend the time outdoors in the winter if I didn't have chickens. The more you're out in the cold, the more you build up your tolerances for it.
Winter skies are spectacular. I was noticing some wispy clouds today that I would have never appreciated if I weren't outdoors. It never ceases to amaze me what beauty Mother Nature creates!

I hear you both. It was so cold and blustery here. But, I went in the coop several times to just stand and enjoy visiting with the flock. Outside, it was in low 20's with a nasty wind chill.... Inside, nice and warm: 50 degrees with the sun shining in, and the flock are always glad to see me. They'll go to bed tonight with their crops stuffed full of sprouts, in addition to their usual ration.

No better place to spend a cold yucky day than in the coop! My husband does not understand how I can "spend hours just sitting out there with chickens".

    X2 to everything :)
Love chicken (and duck) chores... Great reason to get out in the winter.

Ok time for me to stop lurking. I've been lurking all around this great site since late November when I started my first flock. I am having a ball with my chickens and the biggest thing they have changed for me is now I get up at the crack of dawn to open the cook so my girls can get out in the run and to give them fresh water. I keep their hanging feeder and also a PVC feeder stocked at all times. I used to lay in bed till my dog woke me up which was shortly after daylight. Now I have to get up and take her out before its good and light so I can get to the coop and check on the girls. Now one of my biggest problems is trying to find a way to drag myself away from this site.
