I guess they were navigating the river by raft, so they had to get around it by foot. I think a lot of the actual falls have been destroyed in production of this dam so what we see now is far less then what they had to deal with back then. There are some smaller falls a few miles up the river too.

I am sure they had Indians (guides) and occasionally, horses for pack). It would be one 18 LONG miles to deal with that type of terrain!
 
They were not destroyed they are under the water. There is more then one set of falls that were there. Check out The Lewis and Clark encampment next weekend.

As for the dams might want to do a little research about the 1908 flood before the dams were put in.
The Grand Union was flooded up to the second level and the railroad bridge that swung to allow the steam boats to dock was washed down stream.
 
Nice pixs. I was there last December and it looked pretty much like frozen tundra. Nice to see what it looks like this time of year.
