My little black copper marans, whom I hatched on April 11th, and named Uncle Leland, has made me absolutely wrong and so very proud.

Here is her very first little tiny egg! Can you tell which one it is amongst the green one and the grape tomatoes?

I'm glowing with pride

Whoa nelly! That's one dark little egg! How much can I expect to pay to find a pullet that will lay that color? I see fertilized eggs on ebay for $65, 6 or 7 in a bunch, and I find that a bit hard to cough up, given that the hatch rate may be abysmal.

I think I paid about $30 for 6 eggs, including shipping and a couple extra eggs just in case. Mine came from Bev Davis and she's got a long wait list. But sometimes it makes sense to wait a little bit for the best. I'm hoping for a few more eggs this springtime.
