Hmmmm. maybe you could borrow someone's "Roomba" and have it bring the chick to your Turkey. But. I suppose she'd destroy the Roomba and they cost plenty. I got a better idea, have a chick brought to her by drone. Yes, that's the ticket.

I've heard of shingles and knew it's related to chickenpox. I didn't know (or I forgot) it was called Herpes zoster...lol. I'm aware it's not very nice...and I'm getting close to the "age" it likes.(Help!)
None of my family have experienced shingles that I know of so hopefully that's a good sign. (Maybe along the line of discussion...resistance???)
DH's family has experience shingles.He's doomed.
I've read that thread...lol. Or at least some of it. That's why I decided to contact a hatchery here. I was curious. Or nosy. Call it what you will.
I sound incredibly depressing in my post at the top. I don't mean to...According to DH I have high expectations.

I have already had shingles once...it wasn't that bad.
I only had one nerve that had it. It was interesting to see... so clearly.... exactly where the one nerve started at the spine, curved around my chest, with clearly defined branching...and then stoped mid chest.

Not to continue to chime in, but I'm chiming in.
The virus that causes chickenpox (varicella) lays dormant in your nerves. When your immune system is compromised (extended illness, malnutrition, stress, older age, etc) it can reactivate, which causes the herpetic zoster lesions (shingles).
There is a vaccination to reduce the likelihood of you getting shingles and/or reduce the severity of the outbreak. It is FDA approved for 50 and up. Generally speaking even if you "didn't have the chicken pox" we presume everyone older has been exposed and thus has some likelihood of getting shingles. Shingles is pretty nasty - very painful and can be debilitating. Better to not get it.
Your doctor should be able to either administer it to you or write you an Rx for you to get it admin by your pharmacy. The storage for it is kinda crappy, it has to be in a specific freezer (neg 15 or lower) and the fridge/freezer combos don't cut it, so some doctors offices don't stock it.
Something at least to discuss with your doctor. Oh, and it's one injection for the protection, and it's also subcutaneous (under the skin, not like your typical muscle shot) so theoretically it's less painful.
People who are severely immune compromised (ie on high doses of oral or injectable (not inhaled) steroids) or who are on the -cyclovirs shouldn't get the shot. If you live closely with someone who is immune compromised you may also need to segregate yourself for a few days to avoid transmitting the virus to the weaker person (the shot is a "live" virus).
Now I'm going to stop pretending I'm a doctor on the internet, but I thought this might be a good time to remind the older folk that this shot is available, AND TO DISCUSS IT WITH YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU WISH, since it came up.

I got shingles when I was in my mid 5os. I didn't even know I had ever contracted chicken pox although a health dept person I talked to at the time told me it is possible to have silent chicken pox where you might only get one eruption if that. I know I had taken care of my father when he had shingles so I could have come into contact with the virus then. What was so bad is that I got them on my butt.....left cheek up to my mid back. Gawd I was miserable. Couldn't sit, couldn't lay, couldn't do much of anything without irritating it and the acyclovir made me deathly ill. The herpes induced neuritis lasted for months, When my husband was in his early 60s I urged him to get a shingles vaccine. He did, much to my relief. I don't want to see him or anyone else I care about suffer the way my dad or I did with the virus.
SO EVERYBODY GET THE SILLY VACCINE!

I worked out in our Black Berry arbor today. In a fit of mild aggression, I cut two rows down to the ground. We have been fighting fruit flies for two years and I decided to use extreme prejudice on them. Can't eat my berries if there aren't any berries to eat....logical but I won't have many blackberries this year. My plan is to spray, spray spray and then spray some more. Maybe the spotted winged fruit flies will go find somebody else's arbor to munch on. Then I mowed the grass in the orchard where there are two new Honey Crisp apple trees. The apple and pear trees are just full of young fruit. Now the weather just needs to co-operate. From there I hoed three rows of garden. The weather wiped out a row of onions for me. I have a few radishes up along with potatoes and a scattering of lettuce/spinach. SUN! I NEED SUN AND WARM WEATHER!
Then I went and tormented my chickens. They were feeling ignored. I did manage to get some pics of my hen's 'oh crap' moment eye. She is such a sweetie. All I have to say is "Hold still Taffy" and she does so I can pick her up. She never struggles, never complains, just loves the attention. She used to sit on my shoulder when she was a baby so it really twisted my heart when I saw her eye like this.
Yeah, Beer can, I am now seriously looking at MMCM's Fayoumi chicks. They sex them plus they sell 3-4 week old chicks which if they are vaccinated would sure make it easier on them and me since their immune systems would have a chance to develop.
Superchemicalgirl, that poor broody turkey has got to be eligible for some sort of award as the longest lasting broody. That girl needs a chick.

Some insurance plans think the data shows the risk is greater after that time so they'll pay for it then.

Yep.... they were just on one nerve, the right side only.... and on the torso, so just wore a loose shirt, slept on my left side and no prob.
The only bad part was when they decided to take a bit to see if it really was shingles....and scraped the top off of several sores, with a razor blade.
This was back when I lived in civilization.... and was wearing nice pants... the nurse turned away to put the sample on a slide, and I am looking down at the blood dribbling slowly down my chest....I asked her if she could maybe give me sonething so I could keep my pants blood free. She turned back with a cloth just in time.
I am also going to say that with my luck that turkey is going to hatch 450,000 guineas.
Does she get off to eat or drink?
