The Old Folks Home

It was odd....because it was back when I was young...

I was taking the train through the Alps. As the train climbed in elevation, the skin on the backs of my hands just started to crack open. 4 or 5 long splits on the back of each hand.

It was a bit surreal.

I just watched them slowly split...all the way through the skin. The splits getting longer and deeper while I watched.

 Oh my word! :duc

I set Black Australorp eggs. That's all I raise.
You breed them! :loveI only have 2 Aussies left, both from Cackle. One is very small and looks exactly like a black leghorn (Cackle had added them to the bloodline to increase egg laying) and she's never been a healthy bird, possibly because she was on the bottom of the pecking order and picked on so violently at times in the past year that I had to separate her, and only 3 yrs old but she has not laid for some time. Her sister Pepper is a beautiful lady and I love her but she's had a terminal case of PMS for weeks now! She's not full on broody but touch her, she puffs up and growls, one of the other girls gets too close, puffs up and growls, she will park in THE nestbox to lay her egg (forever) and if one of the other girls tries to get in to lay her egg, yep, she puffs up and growls, try to take one the eggs she's parked on? Full on hissy fit!!! :lau Yet after she's layed her egg she pops out of the box and off she goes. Anyway I totally plan on ordering more Aussies as soon as things settle down here, hopefully yet this year. Would love to get them from a breeder but as far as I can tell I am not within a 100+ miles of one. I have drooled over other beautiful breeds and go thru the catalogs like a kid staring into a candy case (I'll take one of those and one of those and one of those!) but my heart just loves puffy balls of feathers.

My bantams are so funny. he two mature cockerels are forever at the fence separating them from the standard hens trying to court the Welsummers and arguing with the roosters. I finally put up a 3 foot high barrier yesterday to provide shade for the standards and put the standard hens 'out of sight out of mind' so to speak. One of the strips of tarp that I used was a bit shorter than the others. I didn't think anything of it until I turned around and caught on of the OEGB cockerels standing on his head trying to see 'under' the tarp. Needless to say the tarp strip got lowered.

I did manage to get the garden hoed. They are calling for rain through Wednesday here so I'm trying to get things outside caught up.
Those OEGBs, they're almost too smart. When I was treating the roosters, I was using the back door of the old ford truck box. I dusted one of the original Creles. And as I was dusting the roosters after him, he hopped up on the back door to watch. He stood there like he was studying what I was doing. I put him down and he hopped right back up so I left him. He didn't get in the way...but I could see out of the corner of my eye that he'd move to get a better view. I found it unnerving.

I think its momentary lapses when there isnt enough page space.... which is a computer term for a place to shuffle info. Oce the transision is complete that will most likely stop....
