The Omega Rocks: The Last & Ultimate Barred Plymouth Rock Flock

We got enough to just lightly coat the ground. But it is damp and quite cold, did not reach above freezing today.

If I was going to kill myself in my own yard it would have been last spring during the three in a row ice storm saga. At one point I went down slope slightly to knock the ice off a tarp shed, and had to go all the way around through my backyard to get back uphill to the house again. It was just a series of terrible falls and no electricity. Hope we don't see anything like that again for a long time, it was really hard on the trees too.

Be careful, Mary and everyone getting snow now. Ice and snow definitely are equalizers-everyone is fair game. I don't want anyone getting injured this winter, especially me! I've had enough over the past 13 years to last the rest of my life.
I didn't lift my foot high enough on the last step to my upstairs and almost stumbled and fell this morning. Winter injuries for me aren't usually about the snow, it's the cold that stiffens my muscles, and joints. Makes it harder to move freely. You don't get deep snow Cynthia? Sometime in winter the fall isn't bad, it's the getting back up that's harder.

Ice storms are the worse.

For anyone baffled by this, I’m pretty sure that this is little brother Randy from “A Christmas Story”, unable to get back up after falling because of his overstuffed snowsuit.

You don't get deep snow Cynthia?
No, not usually. The deepest snow we have had since moving here in 2002 was 10" one year. Generally, we get 2-4" tops, though some winters we get a lot of dustings and mostly 1-2". We've lived in Utah (2x), Colorado and Ohio with the Air Force. Ohio was the worst, -25* plus ice plus snow, but we lived there about 12 years and even bought our first house there.

You aren't kidding! We've had horrible ice storms in GA since I was a child.

Overnight, we got what I call snow pellets, those tiny little balls that feel super dry when you touch them, on the steps and cars. Our high today has been downgraded to 31* and it's there now, expected to hold until about 2 p.m. when it will drop to about 19--20*. My chickens are inside until probably Wednesday afternoon. The oldsters don't need that cold air on them.

Thankfully most of my chickens seem unaffected by the sudden drop in temps. It isn't all that cold for us here yet, so perhaps that's why. I did find one dead polish mix cockerel in the bachelor pen this morning. Not a mark on him. He was in front of the roosts. I'm guessing he either freaked out in the middle of the night and hit a wall and broke his neck or just had a heart attack. I guess that's one less one I need to worry about.

Sorry to hear that, Lisa. I hate when they die suddenly, but it happens on rare occasion. You have to look at it that it wasn't controllable by you and it is one less bird to worry about.
It's not going to make it to the forecasted high of 31*. It's 29* and I think that's as good as it's going to get, with snow flurries and wind. Inside the barn is 41* and the oldsters have heat spots. Bash gets a his own special heat spot because he's so thin and frail and sleeps on the floor in the front corner on his bed of hay. He is not getting up to walk around much, even when I go into his pen. He always comes and stands at my feet for attention, but not today, bless his old heart. He isn't likely to make it through another winter.
Thank goodness his final resting place is already waiting, near all my other special heroes: Suede, Isaac, Hector and Atlas. I also dug three more holes before the ground froze.

Angus is taken Nathaniel's favored spot that he basically trashed with his recent weirdo behavior. Angus likes to have anyone talk to him. He nods off when he's on the roost and I talk to him through the fencing of Mace's pen. I even reached through last night to run my hand down his side. Nathaniel was still wandering the floor, waiting for Angus to settle down so he could get up there without being harassed.
