Hey guys! This is a story I've decided to write. It's based off my RP, The Legend of Rainea. I hope you like it! I'll post chapter updates in my siggy.

    Prologue

The majestic black and white paint mare stood on a large cliff, overlooking a stunning green valley. A soft, gentle breeze brushed through her mane, and the sunlight raining down upon her pelt made it shine like the stars. She was Nakota, the guardian of the valley of Rainea. For almost a thousand years she had defended Rainea from harm, with the help of the other six guardians. Peace had reigned for several hundred years now.

She closed her eyes for several seconds, taking in the soft breeze, but snapped her eyes open abruptly as she felt a miniscule, barely discernable quaking of the ground. She blinked uneasily, quickly shaking the dark thoughts from her mind. No, it was just some young creature discovering their power to create earthquakes. It had to be.
"Hey Nakota!" A bright, cheery voice said from behind her. Nakota breathed a sigh of relief.

"Strider!" A deeper voice snapped, "she is the guardian of the valley! Be respectful!"

Nakota chuckled, "oh, Rakada, it's alright. He's just a foal."

Rakada sighed, walking off in the trees with her foal. Strider just gawked at Nakota as he was practically dragged away by his mother.
Nakota smiled, feeling relief course through her body. That was most likely the cause; Strider was probably just discovering his powers.
But this time, the same tremor happened again, but this time, it was stronger. This wasn't a young creature discovering their powers. An eerie silence filled the air as a chilly breeze ruffled Nakota's fur. She twitched her ears uneasily, could it be? She felt a shiver run down her spine. She hoped it was just because of the particularly cool draft. She walked down into a field of grass by the valley, beginning to graze. This time, she wasn't absorbed in happy thoughts. Instead, dark thoughts plagued her mind. Horrors that no creature in modern Rainea had ever even begun to fathom; Rainea was considered to be paradise, after all. But what Nakota was thinking of, had happened. And she feared it was coming again. She hoped that maybe she was just imagining the tremors, or that the General's army was just doing power drills. But deep down, she knew this was just wishful thinking, and a terrible feeling of dread came over her.

    The terrible memory flashed again.

Seven creatures surrounded a wolf, who was fading into a mist. "You can't keep me away forever," he said softly, his voice being carried by a soft breeze, "I will be back, and this time I won't fail..." With that, he completely faded into the mist and was blown away by some unseen wind.

Nakota's eyes snapped open. She knew exactly what it was. The wind that was blowing... it was the same breeze that blew on that terrible night.
Again, she felt a tremor. It was much stronger than the first two; while mild it would be hard to not notice it. Nakota's legs became wobbly. It all fit together far too well.

    He was back.

    Chapter 1

Roaring, a tortoiseshell kitten dove into the water as she saw a sliver of a fin appear above the water. The fish quickly swam away, and the kitten took a gasp for air, shaking her fur of the chilly water. She blinked as she heard roaring laughter behind her, and she turned around.
"That's hopeless! If you're that loud and slow, they'll escape too easily!" Collia, one of the guardians of the House of the Elders said, still recovering from her laughing fit.
"Well, Collia, show us how!" A small lion cub whined.
"Yeah, show us!" A dalmatian puppy piped up. As the other creatures around her began to jump in, their voices became distorted, slowly growing louder until another voice cut through the air.
"Hey, you brats!" The creatures stopped whining immediately, and turned to look at the creature who had hollered. It was a large, muscular black pegasus."Don't talk to Collia that way! If it weren't for her, you might not be alive!"
Collia sighed, looking at the pegasus. "Why must you speak of the old times, Stone?" She turned her head to look at the stream below her paws. "Well, I'll show you all if you hush." The creatures began cheering, and the tortoiseshell, called Sorrelfur, crawled out of the water, cheering along with them.
Collia stood at the base of the stream, her emerald green eyes seeming to pierce into the crystal clear water. Then, in a single, swift motion, she unfurled her elegant black feathered wings and caught a fish in mid-air, landing on the other side. The fish wriggled in her mouth before it fell limp and she dropped it on the velvety green grass. The creatures on the other side began cheering.
"I want to try it!" Sorrelfur declared, but her ears flicked around as she heard a sound in the bracken behind her. A gentle breeze ruffled her fur, and she sniffed it curiously. It was dark beyond the bracken; she had never been back there before, but she had been tempted. Now she felt the urge stronger than ever, and hoping no one would see her, she slunk towards it, her belly brushing against the ground. As she entered the darkness, she looked behind her. Everyone was still swarming around Collia, and splashing in the stream, trying to do her fish-catching trick as well as she had. I hope they won't miss me, she thought, before turning tail and going further into the bracken.

    ***
Sorrelfur stretched as she got out of her den, along with her brother, Foxshadow. She hadn't found anything in the bracken tunnel, much to her disappointment, but life went on.
"Hey," Foxshadow called to Sorrelfur excitedly, "want to go play down by the stream?"
"Sure!" Sorrelfur grinned, bounding after her brother.
"Be back soon!" Their mother called to them as they began to disappear through the tall, velvety grass.
"We will!" Foxshadow called back. Sorrelfur knew he had no intention on coming back on time, provided that he was having fun, but with a bit of luck she could manage to drag him back. She chuckled softly as she pictured what might happen when she tried in her head.
Sorrelfur had been so distracted by her thoughts that she didn't notice an approaching dip in the ground. She let out a yelp as she collided into her brother, sliding down and into the stream. Foxshadow cried as he felt himself get thrown against a rock and had the wind knocked out of him. Thankfully the stream was very shallow, and the current was weak, so they didn't get carried away.
A white head popped out from behind a rock above the dip. "Are you alright?!" He called urgently.
"Yeah..." Foxshadow grunted, getting to his feet and shaking the water out of his fur. "Not that that was any fun, but I'm alright."
The white fox breathed a sigh of relief. "They're okay, Kate," he called behind him, "you don't have to go hunting for herbs." Another white fox, this one a female with gray streaks throughout her fur, padded beside the first fox.
"Who are you?" Sorrelfur asked them eagerly. "I'm Sorrelfur, and this is my brother Foxshadow."
The first fox chuckled, smiling at Sorrelfur warmly. "I'm Rocky," he said, "and this is my mate, Kate." Kate opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off as the nearby bushes rustled and the ferns shifted. The form of a large, dark gray wolf with many black and occasional white streaks in his fur appeared, looking at the two foxes and cats intently.
"I heard some hollering," he said, his voice like low, rumbling thunder, "is everything okay?"
"Yeah," Sorrelfur said, "my brother and I just slipped." The wolf grunted, nodding his large head. Sorrelfur couldn't help noticing that her entire body was about the size of his head.
"Anyways," he said briskly, "have any of you seen Nakota? I've been looking everywhere for her."
Foxshadow tilted his head to the side, "no. Why do you want to see her? Strider says that only the other guardians are allowed to talk to her."
The large wolf had nothing to say to the last part of Foxshadow's statement. "Let's just say we're old friends," he replied with a hint of mystery in his voice.
Kate suddenly piped up, "I saw her head north to a cave a little while ago," she said.
The large wolf nodded in understanding. "I see."
"Anyways, who are you?" Sorrelfur asked. "I'm Sorrelfur, and this is my brother Foxshadow."
"My name is Thunder," he replied simply. "I'll be on my way now. Thank you all; you've been a great help." He turned and headed north, towards where Kate had said that Nakota had gone.
"Who was that guy?" Foxshadow asked Rocky.
Rocky shrugged. "I have no idea."

    ****
Nakota lay down in a patch of grass, leaning against a large evergreen tree and letting the sun warm her pelt. She hoped to get some rest, to try and relax her mind after what she had discovered a few days ago. She had only laid down for a few moments when a shadow blocked out the sunlight raining down on her face, and she opened her eyes. What she saw made her blood turn to ice. She shot to her feet, snarling at the wolf in front of her. "What are you doing here?!" She demanded, fury boiling out of her. "I banished you years ago!"
The wolf chuckled softly, "I said I'd be back, m'dear," he purred, beginning to walk aroudn her in a steady circle. "What, don't tell me you honestly thought some stupid spell coud keep me away forever. If you really thought that, well, Nakota, you're even more mouse-brained than I thought.
Snarling, Nakota roared as she lunged for him. Thunder grunted as he was thrown against a tree, having the wind knocked out of him. A purple flame erupted in the center of Nakota's hoof, threatening to burn him, yet he was strangely calm.
"Темнота, подъем" Thunder chanted. A dark mist began to surround him and Nakota, obsuring view from outsiders and drowning out noise.
"Whaaat?!" Nakota cried. "What have you done?"
Thunder took advantage of Nakota's distraction and kicked her in the stomach with his hind legs, sending her flying. She grunted as she skid against the ground, and Thunder dove for her. He placed his front paws triumphantly over her neck, "you're no match for my dark magic!" His paws pulsed a glowing purple with power, and his claws sheathed and unsheathed, digging into her neck.
Nakota looked around frantically, hoping to see one of the other guardians coming to her rescue. "Do what you want to me, just leave the other guardians alone!"
"Your wish is my command!" Thunder smirked. "Темнота, прийти и забрать нас" The dark mist began to close in around them, before they, along with the mist, disappeared. An eerie silence filled the air. Rainea would never be the same.
