The Wally-Gee Bee Journey šŸ

Lots of this blooming right now…

The Google machine calls it Baccharis halimifolia. Not that it matters but it’s nice to know there’s possible options. Both of my colonies have full goldenrod supers to nom nom all winter long.
Sounds like an excellent nectar source.

My son and I extracted 5 gallons of honey from 2 medium supers! Not bad for a rookie! 😁 I’m hoping we get a good fall flow so I can at least try some golden rod honey. Some say it’s great and others can’t stand it. We will see soon enough.
I prefer the fall honey, seems to have a little throat heat where I am. Spring flow still good just a little too sweet for me.

So, I’m watching an episode of Homestead Rescue with the Raneys from Alaska. They’re in Colorado on a Bison Ranch. The garden area had a beehive in it. No one ever acknowledged that it even existed. What’s that all about? They don’t like bees?

Yesterday in the heat of the day it was 42F. I went to put my entrance reducers on and there were a few bees hanging out. Zero aggression. I’m watching them as to not squish as I install the reducers and to my surprise one came zooming in to the hive on my right. It was 42 degrees and a honeybee was out foraging! I guess they don’t stop until they physically can’t go. I hope she realizes she can rest for a few months. There’s plenty of honey to get them through.

40F here and the bees come out walk around on the porch, "too cold in winter", walk right back in. A couple maybe out for cleansing flight I suspect. No real threat of sustained night freezing. Pulled all the feed jars as the bees won't have time to process. Ends up being extra moisture.
