I'm super mad at my step dad for saying it was my fault. I've hated him since him and my mom got together and now I hate him more than ever. Ok here's the story-

A long time ago when my mom was going to make a baby shower for my sister, my step dad took this plywood that was serving as the door of the coop and used it to cover the porch where we were going to have the baby shower. He then just got this piece of wire and put it in the chicken coop. I don't work and I legally can't (I don't have money to buy plywood) so there was no other way to keep them from getting out of the coop except for that piece of wire which by the way was too small. I told my mom a million times and she didn't care. I'm always complaining about my step dad because he always does EVERYTHING wrong!!!! and my mom just got mad at me. A few months later, my step dad gets this pit bull. Chickens + pit bull = bad idea. Yesterday I was with my mom all day helping her make tamales and getting everything for Christmas and I couldn't go check on my chickens. Well today I hear a lot of chicken noises....I go out and the pit bull was off the chain killing every single one of my chickens. My step dad goes out and I tell him that his dog killed every single chicken. His response- "Well the chickens were outside since yesterday..." HE was TRYING to say it was MY fault!!! My fault? was I the one that took that plywood off? was I the one that got a pit bull? NO!

Now now, take a breath. It'll be ok. No reason to cull the poor bird. Maybe try and find her a new home or just get her 1 or 2 buddies.

You probably should just wait it out until you can move away from them and live life on your own terms with your own rules. I know if it was me, I'd be making those plans and working toward it starting TODAY. On a personal note....what a jerk to let his dog harm your chickens!!!!!!

My new motto is (I think) from Alice in Wonderland's Red Queen: "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS !!!!! It's good to be Queen." Sometimes it helps to say/think it and go on with your life.....planning your escape all the while, of course.

Don't cull that one bird....Put an add up on craigslist that you are looking for Chickens, and I bet you can get some....

I know you are upset and I'm sorry about that....But please try to have a peaceful Christmas...You see almost all my family is in Heaven now and I'd love to have them on earth even if we had a "fussing Christmas"....but seriously If you can get a new coop built, I bet you can find some folks willing to help you with hens, chicks or the like...

God bless you at this time. Nancy

I tried selling them last month on craig list, but I never got a response. I really don't want to get chickens anymore because I'm afraid the same thing will happen again.

You will know better what to do when you have calmed down a bit. I don't blame you for being furious. I would be too. Please don't kill your last bird. She may turn out to be a friend you need. I think you are right though not to replace your birds until you know you can keep them safe. Right now you have no power or control over things. That's what makes it all the more frustrating.
Things will change--that's the one thing you can count on.
I had a few miserable Christmas's when I was young. Now I see they made me strong.
    Hang in there.
