We got the news back from the vet today: my dog has diabetes caused by an inflamed pancreas. We don't know the cause, but apparently this is really common in min pins. We had 3 options: keep him on the treatment of $300 a day (I don't think I need to convert it into US for y'all now, do I? [IMG]), with 2 injections daily and special food, put him down (another few hundred dollars) or bring him home. Well, I don't have that kind of cash lying around so I'm bringing him home tomorrow (it is 8:20PM in Australia as I write this). They think he only has another day or two to live (ten years old), but personally I'd be glad if he will last the night. I suppose I've prepared myself for the end but I can't really imagine life without him now. [IMG] It's just been really hectic; some birds need to be isolated because of a worm scare, another clutch due on Saturday, my grandfather just got diagnosed with prostate cancer a week ago, begging favours off my sister so I can finally do my "homework"....and now this! [IMG] I haven't been out to feed the birds this afternoon either as it's a 40 degree day with heat blowing in from the desert. I just gave them some (hot) water from the hose and chucked one handful of scratch in the vague direction of the coop. Another reason to feel like crap..... [IMG]

Please don't think I'm writing this for your pity or anything. I just need a place to get it all out. Thankyou so much for listening [IMG]

Ok either god is screwing with me now or I'm dead and this is hell. There is a massive bushfire 3 doors down away from us. We are evacuating the birds. There has NEVER BEEN A [email protected]#$ING bushfire in this area before. Why, of all times, NOW?!?!!!!!!

I got a pic but it's really bad, it cannot convey the terror I feel. I just want to die now. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

please pray for my birds. it CANNOT get worse than this.

    I am with you.
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
    "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawn and say "goodnight,
I'll see you in the morning." And when the time is right.---
Then you will cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

That poem gets me every time. Thankfully no one else is here at the office to see me cry. I am so sorry for what you are going through. I also wonder about putting your dog on a new diet but it sounds like it's too far along for that. At least you are there for your dog (and chickens...) and you can give him a wonderful final evening/day. I don't even want to imagine what you're going through and I'm so sorry for it.
