Thermostat wiring -- help please!

I bought this thermostat:


And found this wiring diagram here on BYC:


When I strip and split the cords, I'll end up with two wires from each power cord. Using the power cord (slots 3 and 4) as an example, how do I know which piece of my power cord goes into slot 3 and which one goes into slot 4? Does it matter?

I hope this makes sense, because DH and I don't know much about electrical wiring!

You want the hot wire going to the #1 section( or section #2, as it doesn't matter as long as it goes straight to the thermostat.). You want neutral going to the lightbulb, so you don't accidentally electrocute yourself thinking the power is off to the lightbulb or heating element.
