I started out small, one roo, named Lzhini (Dine for black) and four hens. Some mistakes early on and I lost one hen to a hawk. Now I have 9 hens, and the same bad-ass roo. My flock began with Astrolorps and I had one successful hatch. I have since added a Leghorn, Sassy; A Wellsumer (I think), Willa; an Easter Egger, Essie and a girl who was unhappy in her other home, but is very happy here, Ophie. Ophie is a Bantam and I think Buff Orpington mix. Though she has a white ear, she lays light brown eggs. The other girls are Two-Feather, Molly, Hidin' Heidi, Wonder and ?. I forget.
In the eves when it is warm, they come to the back porch for treats: raisins, meal worms and such.
I got my chickens mostly for the garden, to deter bugs. But I have become enamored of them for all the other things they do! DSCN5836.JPG

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I too thought the chickens would be great pest control for my gardens. THEY thought they'd be better as taste testers. :hmm

I let them free range most everywhere, except where my vege garden is and when I have new plantings to protect. I find laying chicken wire around where i don't want them to be helps, or place metal baskets over new plants. I let them in the vege garden early spring (my garlic is covered) to do a clean up and again in the fall. They are all ways 'sad' when I block them, but they have two acres and a field of horse and other critter manure to enjoy.

Lol! That's exactly what I did! Then one day I had a flower garden FULL of up-side-down waste baskets, which weren't exactly beautiful. So then I confined them to a separate area and enjoyed my pretty flowers, but I felt bad because yes... chickens were so sad. So now I'm back to the wire and baskets again!
