Toe nail trimming?

Need advice on trimming toenails in 2 of my hens. One has curved outer toes and cannot wear it down and other stays too broody to keep her manicure in shape.

My books tell me to trim only 1/4 inch at a time…and I have styptic powder but don't think I will need it just tipping off the end.

Questions: 1 - what do y'all use..? dog nail clipper for small to med dogs?
2- when is the best time to cause the least stress - anytime or off the roost at nite?

I can handle both gals ,but one is a skittish girl. Don't want to stress her out….'cause she lays eggs nearly every day.

More detailed then my text books. I'll get a clipper and get it done soon.
