We live in upstate New York, and the chicks are getting overcrowded in the indoor brooder. It's time to get them into a larger setup outside. The difficulty is that next week it'll still get below freezing at night...in April :(

Plan to partially cover the outdoor brooder with blankets and add extra heat lamps. However, they are going from 68 degrees on average to possibly 48 degrees (Fahrenheit) at night on a covered deck. Does anyone know if this will be too much of a shock for their little systems?

Last year, I put 4-week-old chicks out just before a sudden (and very unexpected) cold snap. It went from 45* during their first two nights out, to 17*. They were just fine.
