Good Morning,
I am totally new to the chicken raising world. Don't even have my coop built yet. I will only be having 4 or 5 birdss and only for egg raising. I live on the east coast of Canada. Nova Scotia to be exact. Anyone else from this area? Any recommendations on breeds that do well in this area? Any tips for the coop we will be building in the Spring?
Thanks everyone
Joann

You'll likely find friends here.

Chanteclers (Canada's chicken) are a good choice as are Orloffs, Jaerhons, Jersey Giants, Wyandottes, Welsummers, Dorkings, Plymouth Rocks and Buckeyes. Not sure if all are available there.

Lots of ventilation in the coop. I like a big opening on the East side. That catches the morning sun and should be away from prevailing winds. Give them lots of space and they're addictive so you may want to add more when you get delicious fresh eggs from your yard.
Place it in a place with good drainage and lots of shade. You don't want them in a muddy spot.

Hi and :welcome

You can find some coop ideas under the "Coops" tab at the top of the page.
Best of luck and enjoy the site. :D
