I'm looking for someone to share an order of Black Copper Marans and Birchen Marans with me. I'd like to order them from Greenfire Farms who now handles Bev Davis' marans. Their minimum order is 10 chicks, they are not sexed and they are somewhat costly. While I don't mind spending the $ (I'm sure they are worth every single penny!) I'm concerned I could end up with half or more expensive roosters that I would not want to have to give away at such a loss.

At this point, I'm only looking for 2-3 hens but would love it if someone in the New England area who is interested in breeding these beautiful birds share the order with me. I would seriously consider buying future chicks back from this person when I'm able to have another rooster. Currently, my neighbors would not appreciate having another rooster around and my existing boy is 5 years old.

Feel free to PM with questions on price etc.

Thanks

I might be interested in a few Black Copper Marans and I'll bet I'm not far from you. PM me.

I understand from communicating with Greenfire Farms that their Birchens eggs are actually darker than their BCMs. She mentioned the BCMs are usually around #4 but I'm not sure what the Birchens are. I'll email her and post back here with her response.

If the egg color is only a #4 on the egg scale, I might reconsider the purchase... there are many folks on the Marans thread with much, much darker eggs that sell them at a very reasonable price.

Agreed, the price of those Marans with the color scale of a #4 is not good ....Yikers! My suggestion is to shop your BYC'ers.

I've got some that are much much darker than that and we're at the "light" end of the season....(ie they start out much darker) and I know I'm not the only one that would be glad to help you. Not knocking the Greenfire order but that's extremely light!!

Have a blessed one. Nancy

Agreed x2, that's hardly considered a Marans... you brought up a good point Nancy, how the egg shell color oftentimes lightens with time, so is their #4 shell color towards the beginning or end of the lay cycle?

I would make sure to do my research before I invested in such birds.
