Hi everyone. I have the chance to pick up some day-old chicks next weekend and I'd like to jump on it. The only difficulty is that I'm planning on going away for 10 days at the end of June. The chicks would be 2 weeks old at that point. I'm going to visit my folks, so I could bring the chicks with me there. It's about 5 hours in the car, with 1.5 hours of that on a ferry (in the shade so coolish). Do you think they would travel okay (obviously in a sturdy box), or do you think I should reschedule my holiday until after they're feathered and out in the coop so neighbours can feed them?

Thanks all! I'm new to chick keeping, but this will be our second round of backyard chickens.

It should work fine if you are going to use the same brooder box from day 1 to the time you travel. They may not know the difference. I would go with all cover side wall with light on top.

This is my plan. I'm going to brood them in a rubbermaid tote so I would just put that in the back of the car. The travel time is misleading. It's 30 minutes to ferry, wait around then 1.5 hours on ferry, then 1 hour on the other side. During the time the car is not moving I'd put the food and water back in the tote and the birds wouldn't be moving around at all. I'm optimistic and glad you are too.

I appreciate the other point of view though. I'll see how they're doing and assess closer to the date.
