    Hello all.

Two nights ago a rat bit the leg of one of my light brahma pullets. I have attached pictures to show where it is.

As you can see it is right on her joint (the darker area on her leg is the bite). Upon discovery I cleaned the leg with betadine, put bacitracin on the wound, and bandaged it. The bandage did not stay on well, so I took it off and put Rooster Booster pick no more on the wound area to prevent her from pecking at her own leg. Today I washed off the dye and reapplied the bacitracin. Is there anything more I can/should be doing? Or is there anything I am doing that I should discontinue? She is isolated and is eating, drinking, and pooping, though not as much as I think she should be. I am going to try some yogurt or scrambled eggs tonight to try and convince her to eat more.

    Is she able to walk?
Continue to treat the wound as you have done. You can apply plain neosporin or vetericyn to the wound.
Try feeding her wet chick starter, you can mix some hard boiled/scrambled egg in it also.
Keep an eye out for infection, pus, foul odors, etc.

She is able to walk, but she hops on one leg as opposed to putting weight on the hurt leg. The hurt leg is also several shades darker than her other leg, which worries me some.

It did break the skin, and unfortunately she passed away this afternoon from infection that got into her lungs :(. I'm shocked that so much happened so quickly. Thank you for the links though! I will bookmark them for later use. Tonight, though, I go to war against the rats! I've got 18 rat tunnels and 4 pounds of bait for them.

    I'm sorry for your loss.
Hope you are able to get the rats under control.
