We have a 16 year old American Eskimo, 30 lbs and white hair that is so thick we needed a sheep sheer to clip her.
We keep her fenced into the family room because she can't hold her water.
So my hubby is always in there with her, and I'm in the living room with the other dog.
I just assumed that hubby would tell me if she needed anything.
I took a good look at her a few days ago, and cried!
She was infested with fleas (1st time in 16 years). Not only that, I can't tell you how much flea dirt was on her.
I shaved her down. I had to wash her three times with a brush and shampoo to get all the flea dirt out. Then she got a coat of flea spray.
She has a sore on each foot from licking it. Hubby's been bandaging them, but I got them to dry up.
(All this time I'm thinking that there's nothing wrong because she's under hubby's feet all the time.)

This is what just rips my heart out. She could walk but had to be careful not to lose her balance. WHY?
I believe the fleas caused her Anemia.
I got her on an iron supplement right away, and give her treats left and right.

I now understand how serious it is for a flea infestation, or lice and mites with chickens. They can make an animal really sick.
This was a terrible thing that I overlooked. I hope this story helps some one else or their pet. :(

I used to rehab wild bunnies of all ages. One summer a lady brought me
a juvenile. The rabbit had 32 ticks on him. The lady found him under a pine
tree and was able just to walk up and pick him up.
He was so weak. We took all 32 ticks off of him and cleaned him up, and plumped him up.
He survived and was released.
